Smart Depth Precision Planting Systems
Adjusting Planting Depth
Adjusting planting depth is time-consuming. SmartDepth allows you to quickly and easily adjust from the cab as conditions change. This saves time and gives you the confidence that every row is planted exactly where it needs to be.

Too Shallow, Too Deep, Just Right
Many farmers believe that the correct way to plant is to sow seeds deep enough so that each seed is in a moist environment. While moisture is important, there are also disadvantages to planting too deep or too shallow. With planting that is too shallow, seeds may not be in moist soil and will not germinate uniformly. But what happens when there is more moisture, even in shallow areas?
In this scenario, planting deeper than necessary will cost you germination speed and uniformity, due to the lack of warmth in deeper soil that is essential for initiating germination.
Same Setting Doesn't Mean Same Depth
Even when the same depth setting is selected, the actual planting depth can vary by up to ½ inch due to manufacturing deviations and/or wear. You can check this variation on your planter by performing a depth check on each row unit. SmartDepth eliminates variability between rows through a calibration process to ensure that the same depth setting truly means the same depth.

Achieving Depth for Shallow-Planted Crops
When trying to precisely plant crops like cotton below the soil surface, it is crucial to set the correct depth.
Being off by ¼ or ½ inch can be the difference between getting a great stand or needing to replant. SmartDepth allows you to make depth adjustments in 1/10-inch increments from the cab, so you can achieve the desired seed depth exactly where it's needed.
Informed Decisions for Connecting SmartDepth and SmartFirmer
Pulling a few seeds from the field cannot tell you if your depth setting is correct. SmartFirmer is a sensor that measures available seed moisture, so you can properly adjust depth and be confident you'll have dense stands in your crop. Plant at the perfect depth for your conditions by using the information from SmartFirmer displayed on your 20|20 monitor for seamless adjustment with SmartDepth.

Precision Planting is an American company founded in 1993 by farmers Gregg and Cindy Sauder, driven by a desire to increase planter precision and achieve higher yields through exact seed placement. Their market adoption was rapid, as local farmers observed the benefits and purchased the equipment, thereby popularising precision planting technologies.
The company focuses on retrofitting: it does not manufacture standalone or complete planters, but instead develops sub-assemblies (sensors, metering systems, etc.) and offers solutions that can be integrated onto existing frames, allowing farmers to upgrade the planters they already use.
Acquired in 2017, Precision Planting is now part of the PTx brand, the result of the AGCO–Trimble partnership, offering retrofit and factory-fit solutions for brands such as Fendt, Massey Ferguson, and Valtra.
