Mobile Solar Panels: How did one farmer manage to save over €70,000 in a single season?

In modern agriculture, efficiency is no longer a choice, but a condition for survival. Every farm is looking for ways to optimise costs, and one of the biggest budget "consumers" remains, traditionally, irrigation.

Today, we present the story of a farm in North-East Bulgaria*, which replaced its diesel generator with an intelligent solar system.

The Challenge: Dependence on diesel and high operating costs

For years, the farm relied on a 175 HP (130 kW) diesel generator to power a 90 kW irrigation pump between 1 June and 30 August.

The reality on the ground looked like this:

  • Huge fuel consumption: In a single season (92 days) of non-stop operation, approximately 53,168 litres of diesel were consumed.
  • Serious financial burdens: Fuel alone cost over €70,000 per season (when diesel was priced at €1.33 per litre).
  • Maintenance costs: Maintenance, oil, and filters added another €4,000 – €6,000 to the annual bill.
  • Risk of breakdowns: A failure at the peak of a heatwave can compromise the entire harvest.

The Technological Solution: Direct field power supply system. Mobile solar panels and batteries from NIK, with no red tape and no building permits required!

The solution came in the form of a hybrid system that combines photovoltaic power and battery storage (Battery Energy Storage System – BESS). The installation includes:

  • Power: 600 kWp, distributed across three mobile PV containers (200 kWp per container).
  • Energy buffer: 1,566 kWh storage capacity (6 modules of 261 kWh each).
  • Independence: The system covers the pump's needs even on cloudy days or at night, completely eliminating the need for diesel.
  • No permits required: Unlike fixed photovoltaic parks on agricultural land, mobile solar panels do not require a building permit.

The figures that transformed his business

Following the implementation of the system, irrigation costs changed radically, with the farmer estimating a full return on investment within a maximum of 4 years.

From consumer to producer

The sun works 12 months a year, while intensive irrigation lasts only 3 months. With an average production of 1200 kWh/kWp in the region, the system generates approximately 720 MWh annually.

After covering irrigation consumption (199 MWh), approximately 521 MWh remain for sale to the grid, which represents potential additional income.

Key advantages of the solar solution

Financial benefits:

  • Diesel savings: ≈ €71,400 per season (based on actual consumption).
  • Optimised maintenance: Reduction in service costs of over €3,300 annually.
  • Additional income: Revenue from selling surplus energy
  • Security: Say goodbye to unexpected emergency repair costs during the peak season (which can reach €20,000).

Technical advantages:

  • Mobility: Only mobile solar systems can be used anywhere – no concrete foundation required.
  • Energy autonomy: The battery energy storage system (BESS) guarantees 24/7 operation.
  • Predictability: Zero dependence on fuel price fluctuations.
  • Modern management: Remote monitoring and automatic control via mobile devices.
  • Long service life: Over 25 years for panels and up to 15 years for battery modules.

Environmental footprint:

  • Clean production: Saving approximately 144 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every season.
  • Zero local pollution: No fuel leaks into soil or water, essential for crop purity.

Investing in a mobile solar system with battery storage is not just a "green" initiative. Given the unpredictability of diesel prices and subsidies, alongside increasingly stringent EU environmental requirements, this is a strategic financial decision that turns one of your largest expenses into a profitable asset.
